Write to Premier David Bartlett
Send a letter or email Premier David Bartlett and asking him to immediately halt the logging of old growth forest in Tasmania’s Upper Florentine Valley.
Key points to include in your letter are:
- Tasmania’s Upper Florentine valley contains forests of immense natural beauty, with towering eucalypts emerging from an understorey of myrtle, sassafras and celery top pine.
- These forests are home to the endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle and grey goshawk and the spotted-tailed quoll.
- The myrtle elbow orchid occurs no where else on earth. The valley also contains caves with evidence of aboriginal occupation dating back to the last ice age, 30 000 years ago.
- In addition to these biodiversity and cultural values, old growth forests such as those in the Upper Florentine are crucial absorbers of atmospheric CO2 and regulators of groundwater flows.
- The Upper Florentine is virtually surrounded by the Tasmanian World Heritage Area and remains largely untouched by industrial logging. The opportunity exists in this area to preserve a continuum of natural vegetation from the valley floor to the mountain tops.
- Tasmanians from all walks of life are standing up to defend the Upper Florentine. It is within the power of the Tasmanian government to protect this magnificent place.
- Please immediately halt all logging in the Upper Florentine Valley and protect these unique old growth forests for future generations.
